Gadens draws second partner from rival

Gadens has a new partner in Melbourne, the second it has hired from a rival firm.

Elliot Raleigh joins the national firm from Kemp Strang. In January, Gadens also attracted partner Archie Smith from the firm.

Raleigh started his legal career with Clayton Utz in Melbourne in 2005 and moved to Allen & Overy in London in 2007. He returned to Clayton Utz in 2009 and joined the Kemp Strang partnership in 2016.

The appointment is a key step in Gadens’ banking and finance practice expansion, said Grant Scott-Hayward, Gadens’ CEO.

“Elliot specialises in construction and investment property finance, corporate finance, project finance and acquisition finance, with a wide range of clients including Australian and overseas financial institutions and borrowers,” Scott-Hayward said. “His experience covers a broad range of industries including aged care, health care, financial and business services, manufacturing, property investment and development, and retail.”

Raleigh said that he joined the firm because of its well-established national banking practice, which has strong relationships with all of the major financiers operating in the Australian market.

In addition to banking clients, the firm expects corporate clients to benefit from the new appointment, Scott-Hayward said.

Gadens’ appointments from Kemp Strang also follow that of partner Michael Bampton from legacy Henry Davis York earlier this year.

In December, Kemp Strang appointed partner Scott Cameron, who came from Magic Circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, in Brisbane.
