Dentons supplants Norton Rose Fulbright in Venezuelan launch

Dentons is set to take over the former Venezuelan practice of Norton Rose Fulbright.

The world’s largest law firm has agreed to create Despacho de Abogados miembros de Dentons, which is set to join the verein after a vote of the partners. It will be part of the Latin American and the Caribbean region for Dentons, which includes Brazil, the Caribbean, Central America, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

“We are growing faster in Latin America and the Caribbean—and with truly high-quality firms—as no one has ever done before,” said Elliott Portnoy, Dentons global chief executive.

Despacho de Abogados is known for its work in energy and natural resources, corporate, labour and employment, litigation and dispute resolution, banking and finance, tax, and public law.

Dentons said that Venezuela, one of the world’s largest oil producers, is a strategic Latin American jurisdiction.

“Clients within Latin America and the Caribbean, and clients wanting to do business in that dynamic and growing region, will benefit from high-quality legal service on a truly global scale that only Dentons can offer,” said Joe Andrew, Dentons global chairman.

The move into Venezuela with a local member firm comes after Dentons launched offices in Nicaragua and El Salvador in 2018.

“This combination will allow us to continue our unprecedented, rapid growth in Latin America and the Caribbean with elite firms across a broad spectrum of practice areas,” said Jorge Alers, CEO of the firm’s Latin American and the Caribbean region.
