Australian firm launches legal operations graduate program

The future leaders of the fast-changing legal services market now have a new place to start their career in Australia.

MinterEllison has launched the innovative program for tech-focused legal operations graduates and received great interest for its first intake who will begin in September 2019.

Gary Adler, MinterEllison’s Chief Digital Officer, says that the Revolution at MinterEllison program is about exposure to change and disruption - shaking up what it means to be a graduate at a leading law firm.

“We need those graduates who have an understanding of the law, but also an understanding of how technology and continuous process improvement is impacting the legal industry and our clients' businesses,” he said. “We will expose our graduates to a raft of new technologies and ways of working and will encourage them to leverage new technologies and ideas.”

Participants will receive a unique development program designed to train future industry leaders including Lean Six Sigma, Design Thinking, and Agile methodologies.

The program begins in Melbourne but a national roll-out is planned in 2020.

The MinterEllison Legal Operations team is also expanding with the development of a tier of four Legal Operational Analysts who will have experience in industry and working in operational functions.

HFW signs portfolio litigation funding deal

A portfolio litigation funding deal worth GBP £25 million has been agreed between HFW and litigation funder Augusta Ventures.

Clients will have faster access to competitive rates for litigation funding and decisions on which cases qualify will be taken by a panel of Augusta and HFW partners.

"This deal with Augusta provides improved accessibility to dispute resolution funding for our clients. For the funding of disputes with Augusta we have agreed preferential terms that will save our clients time, money and mean they pay nothing if their claim fails,” explained HFW litigation and innovation partner Brian Perrott.

Leading entertainment firms combine

Two law firms with a client list including some major names in entertainment have announced a merger.

Los Angeles-based Eisner LLP is combining with New York boutique firm Tavel & Shulman whose founders Andy Tavel and Dan Shulman will join Eisner as partners.

Over the past decade, Tavel & Shulman established itself as a premier New York firm representing talent and businesses, primarily in the music industry. The firm’s clients include global superstar artists, music producers, songwriters, and emerging talent, as well as start-ups and established media companies.

Tavel was previously with Greenberg Traurig and launched its entertainment practice in New York. Shulman was also with GT.

“Our New York office is a key element in the firm’s growth plans and solidifies our reputation as a bicoastal law firm with the resources and firepower to deliver premier counsel to our clients, regardless of their location,” said Eisner chair Michael Eisner.
