DLA Piper to boost Australian partnership

DLA Piper is set to boost its partnership in Australia with the addition of two senior lawyers.

Paul McNab and John Fogarty will join the firm next month as partners, making the move from two different firms.

Amber Matthews, DLA Piper managing partner in Australia, said that the capabilities and experience of the two new partners will be valuable additions to the Australian and global tax and competition practices.

McNab, who will be based in Sydney, brings to the firm more than 30 years’ experience in tax dispute resolution, particularly tax litigation. He moves to DLA Piper from PwC, where he has been a partner for more than two decades.

During his time at the Big Four accountancy firm’s tax controversy and litigation practice, he advised international and Australian public and private companies, which included US clients with major operations in Australia.

Before PwC, McNab was at the Australian Taxation office, where he handled matters that included high-profile audits, litigations, and settlements.

“We have a market-leading tax offering, and Paul’s reputation in the Australian market represents a significant step in the further development of our tax litigation capabilities – particularly with important technical developments in Australia, and a constantly changing international tax environment,” said Jock McCormack, DLA Piper’s head of tax in Australia.

Fogarty, who will be based in Melbourne, will move to the firm from Corrs Chambers Westgarth, where he has focused on Australian consumer law enforcement. A member of the firm’s commercial litigation and class action groups, he has particular experience in consumer investigations, class actions, royal commissions, and other commissions of inquiries.

“The versatility of John’s skillset, and his broad commercial litigation experience will bolster our already strong mergers clearance and competition enforcement practice, and enable us to take advantage of a number of new opportunities in the market,” said Cameron Maclean, DLA Piper’s head of litigation and regulatory in Australia.
