Macpherson Kelley recruits senior ATO lawyer

Senior associate to play key role in ATO settlements, disputes and litigation matters

Macpherson Kelley recruits senior ATO lawyer

Macpherson Kelley has boosted its tax practice with the appointment of a senior executive officer from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

The firm has appointed Carlos Barros as senior associate, based in Melbourne. He became the third senior associate in the firm’s growing Victorian tax team, which is led by principal Pratheepan Balasubramaniam.

“Carlos will play a key role in our ATO settlements, disputes and litigation practice and will be a valuable resource for our SME and multi-national clients and professional services network,” Balasubramaniam said. “The ATO continues to strengthen its compliance approach to cross border investment, property groups, the use of company funds (or “Division 7A”), trusts and wealth-extraction tax avoidance schemes.”

Before the ATO, Barros was a tax consultant at PwC, a tax manager at Deloitte, a senior manager at William Buck, and a senior tax associate at Sladen Legal.

Steve Parker, the firm’s chief executive, said the firm is well positioned to assist with well-informed planning, which is becoming more crucial as the ATO takes a more focused approach to compliance.

The new recruit moves to the firm after Macpherson Kelley made three lateral hires in August.
