US BigLaw appoints AU energy partner with Clayton Utz hire
Jones Day has appointed Andrew Smith as its newest partner in its energy practice in Brisbane.

Smith, who joins the US BigLaw from Clayton Utz, has particular experience in the development and operation of significant coal, oil, gas and electricity projects in Australia. He has advised both in domestic and international multibillion-dollar project infrastructure and development, joint ventures and commodity sales.

“Andrew is a strong addition for us, as we continue to grow our presence in Brisbane and Australia, and grow our national energy and resources team,” said John Cooper, partner-in-charge of Jones Day's Brisbane office.

“He brings to Jones Day substantial experience in the energy and resources sector and an impressive record of successful client engagement, while building further on our capability in Brisbane and nationally,” Cooper said, adding that the addition of their new partner boosts their position for long-term growth in the sectors.

Meanwhile, Jones Day Regional Partner-in-Charge of Australia and Japan Chris Ahern noted that the added experience Smith brings will be appreciated by clients amid the recent pricing gyrations of the commodities markets.

Jeff Schlegel, the co-head of Jones Day's global energy practice, said that Smith will not only work with clients in Australia but also worldwide.
Smith joins the firm’s general partnership.
