A U.S. criminal defense lawyer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after garnering millions in bribes from clients to influence case outcomes.

Abraham Moses Fisch was sentenced on more than a dozen counts, including conspiracy, obstruction of justice, money laundering and failure to file tax returns, The Houston Chronicle has reported.

The Houston criminal defense lawyer was convicted in May. Prosecutors asked for at least 19 years, calling only one witness to testify during the sentencing hearing.

The mother of one of Fisch's clients who sold her property to come up with $80,000 Fisch said could secure the man's release said she had to come out of retirement to support herself following the ordeal. Her son was sentenced to 15 years for Federal drug crimes.

Fisch was contrite prior to the sentencing, The Houston Chronicle said, speaking softly to U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal before she announced her sentence,

"This has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I know you'll be just."
