Top firm continues renewable energy streak with another Qld deal
King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) continues its work on renewable energy deals this year with the purchase of a major solar farm project in Queensland.

The Clare Solar Farm has been acquired by Netherlands-based DIF and Australia’s Lighthouse Infrastructure, which were both advised by KWM. The 125MW solar farm in North Queensland, which is expected to become operational in the next 12 months, may have been purchased by the duo for about $250m, a report from The Australian Financial Review said.

The KWM team was led by partners Rod Smythe and Scott Gardiner, who were supported by partners Shannon Etwell and Mal Brennan, senior associates Jonathan Mitchell and John Tanner, and solicitor Lachlan Fahey.

Smythe said that investors are seeking opportunities in Australia’s renewable power projects. Both DIF and Lighthouse Infrastructure are already active in the space.

Throughout 2017, KWM has been acting for companies across project development, project financing, acquisitions, and divestments in the growing renewables market of the country.

The firm recently advised on deals for the Darling Downs solar project, the Bungala Solar PV project, the Badgingarra Wind Farm, the Silverton Wind Farm, and the Ross River Solar Farm.

In January, Australasian Lawyer reported that Herbert Smith Freehills advised Fotowatio Renewable Ventures and Gilbert + Tobin advised National Australia Bank Limited and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation on the Clare Solar Farm.
