Tasmania welcomes new magistrate

Tasmania Attorney-General Elise Archer has announced the appointment of Robert Webster to the Hobart Magistrates Court, following the recent retirement of Magistrate Sam Mollard.

“I congratulate Mr Webster, who will begin as a magistrate on 7 October 2019 after transitioning from his current roles,” said Archer. “Mr Webster has been the chief commissioner of the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal since 2016. He previously practised law in Hobart for more than 20 years and is very well-respected within the legal profession.”

Meanwhile, the Law Society of Tasmania has welcomed the appointment Webster as the state’s newest magistrate. Evan Hughes, president of the Law Society of Tasmania, said that Webster’s professional experience makes him ideal for the role.

“Mr Webster will be an excellent magistrate,” he said. “He has diverse life and practice experience. His time in private practice and recent experience as chief commissioner of the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal, along with concurrent appointments as chair of the Health Practitioners Tribunal, Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, Motor Accidents Compensation Tribunal, and Asbestos Compensation Tribunal will have equipped him well to carry out his new role. The Law Society congratulates him and wishes him well.”
