NSW to get new weather stations with Clayton Utz’s help

Clayton Utz has played a key role in the construction of new weather stations in New South Wales.

The top-tier firm has advised the NSW Department of Industry on a joint initiative with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), which will deliver three Doppler radar weather stations Parkes, Brewarrina, and Hillston-Ivanhoe.

The Clayton Utz team was headed by partners Andrew Steele and Ken Saurajen. They were assisted by senior associate Max Bryant and lawyer Nicola Bevitt.

BOM will appoint a contractor to build the stations, with help from a unique agreement with the Department of Industry for funding, Clayton Utz said. The stations will help deliver real-time rainfall data and wind observations across 321,000 square kilometres of western NSW.

Data from the stations will help emergency services better anticipate and respond to fires, as well as assist farmers and graziers in making business decisions based on the weather.

Clayton Utz said that it advised the NSW Department of Industry on the procurement, delivery, and operation of the stations, which are expected to be operational in 2022.
