Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) has added an international arbitration expert to its Sydney office.

Andrew Battisson has joined the NRF partnership from Allen & Overy (A&O), where he was most recently a partner. He played an important role in developing A&O’s international arbitration practice in the Asia-Pacific region after he relocated to Singapore in 2009.

Battisson has extensive experience in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration, with a particular focus on disputes in the finance, energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications sectors.

“The addition of Andrew to our partnership is evidence of the continuing investment our firm is making in its dispute resolution capability in Australia and regionally, with a particular emphasis on enhancing our international arbitration offering,” said Wayne Spanner, NRF managing partner in Australia.

NRF has taken on a number of substantial litigation matters across a range of sectors, broadening both the firm’s experience and offering to local and global clients. The appointment of highly experienced partners of Battisson’s quality will further strengthen the firm’s investment in an important practice, he said.

“Andrew’s appointment reflects the growing strength, depth and reach of our international arbitration practice and further emphasises the importance of the Asia-Pacific region to our clients and practice,” said Mark Baker, NRF global co-head of international arbitration.

Battisson said that is a “perfect fit” for his practice, which has spanned most regions of the world and many of the major industries that the firm has identified as a key focus of NRF’s global offering.

He has advised clients on contractual, joint venture, infrastructure, and investment treaty disputes across Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has also acted for international banks involving emerging market counterparties under both national and international law in Asia, India, Europe, and South America.

NRF’s recent lateral partner recruits include Natasha Toholka from Hall & Wilcox, Penelope Ford from MinterEllison, and Gavin Scott from Ashurst.
