New Federal Circuit Court judge appointed

A former Acting Master of the NT Supreme Court has been appointed to the Federal Circuit Court.

Anthony (Tony) David Young was appointed as a judge of the Federal Circuit Court by the Attorney-General yesterday.

Young was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1983 and signed the High Court roll that same year, following his graduation from Melbourne University in 1982.

Following his service as Hearing Commissioner for the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission, Young briefly took up the position of Acting Master of the NT Supreme Court in 2004, before returning to practice as a barrister in 2005.

Young began his career as a solicitor with Kevin Davine and Sons in Victoria, before moving to the Northern Territory in 1986, to take up a position working for the Legal Aid Commission.  He served as a solicitor for the Australian Legal Aid Office and later the Northern Land Council.

In his varied legal career, Young has worked in family law, administrative and public law, commercial law, trade practices, insolvency law and human rights law.

Young, who will officially take up the role on 31 July, will replace Judge Alexandra Harland, who transferred to the Melbourne registry back in March.
