National firm names two top lawyers as partners
Sparke Helmore has promoted two lawyers to its partnership, which is now 73-strong and growing. Katherine Whittemore is the newest partner at the firm’s government group, while Brendan Charles is the newest partner at the firm’s workplace group.

Phillip Salem, Sparke Helmore national managing partner, said starting the year with the promotion of Whittemore and Charles was “fantastic.” The firm’s partnership is growing through promotions and external lateral hires, he added.

The firm will also be growing this year through its merger with Jarman McKenna, which is expected to close on 1 March. The integration will see the whole Jarman McKenna team start working at the Sparke Helmore office in Perth later this year, Salem recently told Australasian Lawyer.

The firm’s newest partners are based in Melbourne. With a strong background in administrative and criminal law, Whittemore is an experienced litigator who regularly appears in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Circuit Court, Federal Court and High Court of Australia for Commonwealth Government entities. She advises in matters involving statutory interpretation, merits review and judicial review and her experience extends to debt enforcement proceedings, civil penalty proceedings, coronial inquiries and intervention order matters.

Meanwhile, Charles specialises in employment and workplace relations and acts for both public- and private-sector clients. An experienced litigator, he has acted in both state and federal jurisdictions.
