Mills Oakley has hired Anthony Watson from Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills, as it grows its tax practice to cope with client demand.
Watson is now leading Mills Oakley’s Sydney tax practice, which handles matters related to all federal taxes, including direct and indirect taxes, and all New South Wales duties and taxes. He started with the firm in June after more than 20 years at Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills, the country’s largest specialist tax advisory firm.
Watson, whose broad experience and expertise covers all areas of taxation, regularly advises some of the country’s largest corporations in matters in Australia, Asia, the US, and Europe. Working on specialised tax-only projects or in cooperation with other practice areas in complex transactions, he advises from conception to strategy, in matters including structuring, due diligence, execution, and risk management.
John Nerurker, Mille Oakley chief executive, said that Watson can add value across all practices because nearly all transactions have a tax element. Recently, Watson assisted the firm’s property team with stamp duty and CGT aspects of a major commercial property transaction, the firm’s government team with the GST implications of clean energy funding, and the firm’s dispute resolution team with a tax litigation matter, Nerurker said.
