Law Society of Tasmania elects new president

The Law Society of Tasmania has a new president, with its recent of election of Evan Hughes. Hughes is a principal at the Lauceston-based firm Rae & Partners and practises civil and criminal litigation.

“I see the society as a strong and relevant voice on issues that affect the profession and access to justice, and I look forward to the opportunity I now have to be more closely involved in the ongoing work of the society,” said Hughes.

Hughes’ priorities for the next 12 months include assisting the Law Council of Australia in its response to the federal government’s proposed changes to the Federal Court and Family Court, and encouraging young lawyers in Tasmania’s rural areas to stay in the profession. He also aims remove barriers that inhibit female lawyers to advance in their careers.

“I have a particular interest in the way we can use technology to improve the way we do things and improving the services available to members of the profession,” said Hughes. “The health and well-being of lawyers, in particular mental health, remains one of my key areas of concern.”

Hughes is a graduate of the University of Tasmania and has twenty years of legal experience.
