K&L Gates continues Australian expansion with Sydney special counsel hire

K&L Gates is continuing to bolster its ranks in Australia, this time recruiting a special counsel to join its Sydney base.

Nicholas Heinecke joins the global firm’s corporate and transactional team from Holman Webb, where he spent more than two years as a special counsel.

Heinecke has over 10 years' experience as a corporate and commercial advisory lawyer. At Holman Webb, he oversaw a wide range of commercial matters, particularly in the areas of health, aged care, and life sciences.

The special counsel has particular expertise in M&A, joint ventures, regulatory and compliance advice, infrastructure projects, administrative law, and commercial disputes.

He was also a senior associate at Horton Rhodes Legal, where he acted on transactions and disputes and litigation in the commercial space. He was also an in-house counsel at Macquarie University, where he acted on major projects, partnerships, the fitout of the institution’s hospital, and the construction and management of student accommodation.

The appointment comes after K&L Gates added special counsel Matthew O’Connor in Melbourne. O’Connor’s appointment followed those of partners Luke Westmore and Zac Kerr, who also moved from Mills Oakley.

The firm also elevated two lawyers to the global partnership earlier this month.
