A Melbourne lawyer says his work is cut out for him as he takes the reins of a national association

International partner in legal profession first
Ashurst partner Ross McClymont has become the first lawyer to be appointed as president of the Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association (ARITA).

With over 25 years’ experience, McClymont leads Ashurst’s restructuring, insolvency and special situations group in Australia. He is also the firm’s managing partner in Melbourne.

ARITA, which represents 84% of registered liquidators and 89% of registered trustees in Australia, is the professional body for restructuring and insolvency practitioners in the country. It also represents professionals working in business reconstruction and personal insolvency.

John Winter, ARITA CEO, said that McClymont, a longstanding member of the organisation’s board, is an accomplished business leader and a highly experienced restructuring and insolvency legal professional.

“As president we are confident that he will continue to provide strong leadership to ARITA and the profession, and I look forward to working with him in meeting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” Winter said.

McClymont said that he is delighted to be the first lawyer appointed as president of ARITA. He said that he has his work cut out for him.

“These are testing times for the profession as we face significant ongoing legislative change in our space, together with the impending implementation of the ASIC user-pays model for our members,” he said. “ARITA will continue to be at the forefront of the debate in Australia in terms of achieving world's best practice in our insolvency and reconstruction laws and processes, and to articulate the important role our members play in the broader economy.”
