Houston lawyer shoots nine before being killed by police

The lawyer, whose law partnership was dissolved in February, wore military-style apparel with old Nazi emblems.

A lawyer has been killed by police over night after he injured nine people in a shooting spree in Houston, Texas.

According to local reports, Police initially declined to identify the gunman except for identifying him as a lawyer. Both KHOU and KPRC Houston said that police investigated the shooter’s black Porsche and that the sports car was registered to a certain Nathan DeSai.

The gunman was wearing military-style clothes with old Nazi emblems and had two weapons and more than 2,500 rounds of live ammunition, The Associated Press reported. Reuters reported he had 2,600 rounds and that the police have recovered 75 spent casings.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the gunman used a .45 pistol but authorities also found a long gun in his car. The publication said that the shooting spree was initially reported at about 6:30 a.m. near the Randall's grocery store at Weslayan and Bissonnet.

The gunman is said to have randomly shot at drivers in the affluent neighbourhood of West University Place before exchanging gunfire with authorities in the 4400 block of Law Street.

Six of the injured had gunshot wounds while three had eye injuries from flying glass, according to The Associated Press.

One is said to be in critical condition while another is in serious condition, Reuters reported. Both are expected to survive.

In interviews with KPRC Houston, DeSai’s former law partner, Ken McDaniel, said that their partnership was dissolved in February for economic reasons.

“If he did do something like this, it's out of character. It's shocking and upsetting,” McDaniel told KPRC Houston. “I don't think you would expect anybody to go do anything like this... if Nathan did do this.”

McDaniel told KHOU he hasn’t spoken to DeSai since February.

“It's a horrible situation, I don't like hearing anything that's happened... Not only to Nathan, to everybody that is involved and I don't know what to say,” he said.

KHOU reported that DeSai’s family said his parents last talked to the suspect on Sunday night when he had dinner with them.
