Global litigation funder boosts team in Europe

Omni Bridgeway and IMF Bentham has boosted its team in Europe, recruiting an experienced lawyer as director of collective redress.

Maarten van Luyn has joined the global litigation funder and will be based in Amsterdam. His appointment comes after Omni Bridgeway and IMF Bentham completed their merger in November. First announced in October, the merger was touted by the pair as creating the world’s largest dispute financing team.

He will source, assess, and manage high-value strategic litigation finance matters throughout Europe, with a focus on group claims and legaltech solutions for group claims, the company said.

“With more than 25 years of both international and local experience, Maarten brings with him a wealth of expertise, skills and a deep professional network,” said Raymond van Hulst, Omni Bridgeway managing director.

Van Luyn was most recently director and general counsel at financial services firm Aegon Nederland. He was also previously a Baker McKenzie partner in Amsterdam, where he managed an international practice focused on corporate law, litigation, finance, banking, and securities. Van Luyn was also a banking and finance partner at boutique litigation firm BarentsKrans, which is based in The Hague.

Omni Bridgeway and IMF Bentham said that van Luyn specialises in strategic litigation involving regulated industries. His extensive experience includes acting in commercial transactions as well as litigation concerning corporate finance, capital markets, and financial services.

Van Luyn explained why he considers his move to the litigation financer as an exciting progression in his career.

“The combination of Omni Bridgeway and IMF Bentham creates one of the world's truly global financiers, leading the market for third-party dispute finance. This market is rapidly coming of age,” he said.
