The rapidly expanding firm says it’s not bound by fancy offices and networks.
New Law firm Nexus Lawyers
has recently expanded its rapidly growing network to Queensland, with the establishment of a Brisbane office.
Founder Marcus McCarthy said the firm’s model is essentially a network of contractors, making the expansion process extremely efficient. He said while the firm does have a physical office in Queensland that took time to setup, with specialist software, the firm is able to have lawyers connected virtually overnight.
“We don’t acquire offices as such, we just put people into a remuneration system so they’ve already got practices or they want to drop out of a big firm to start a practice with their own clientele and they just simply slot into our backbone. We can have consulting principles up and running in a day – it’s that fast,” he said.
“We’re not burdened with some of the slow systems of a larger firm and because we are a network or a firm of independent contractors effectively, we can apply that sort of consulting scale up scale down model really well, really quickly.”
McCarthy said the firm, which specialises in mining, construction, infrastructure and property development will be looking to expand to regional centres as well as having a presence in all capital cities. He said lawyers already in regional areas benefit from the firm’s broader network, where they can draw on the firm’s man power when needed.
“They’re interested in coming on board with us because we provide a bigger backbone for them to service their larger clients,” said McCarthy. “They do service quite a big market… They don’t probably quite have the resources to service it really well. That’s something that took us by surprise.”
The firm’s next step will be establishing a presence in Melbourne.
While McCarthy said Nexus will never be a 400 lawyer firm, he said the goal is to establish a practice with enough lawyers around Australia to efficiently cater for needs of all clients.
“If you have 20 or 30 in each state, you’re pretty well serviced for all the business, corporate and commercial work,” he said.
