EXCLUSIVE: Founding partner hands over MP reigns

Terry McCabe returns to private practice today after handing the McCabes Lawyers reigns over to Andrew Lacey.

“The firm is stronger today than it has ever been but it has taken a huge effort on the part of the McCabes team,” newly appointed Lacey told Australasian Lawyer.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved but understand that staying strong, relevant and at the top of your game takes renewed effort and commitment.”

Shortly after he joined the firm in 2001, Lacey was appointed principal in the Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice area, then divisional leader of the commercial division, a role he has appointed to in 2011.

“I feel honoured to be taking over the role from Terry as Managing Principal, and look forward to building on the solid foundations that have been laid over the last 25 years,” he said.

As more market entrants take on pieces of the legal market pie, Lacey said he’ll be focussing on keeping the firm at the forefront of innovation.

“There are many challenges facing the legal profession.  New market entrants and the significant impacts of technology and data analysis are but two,” he said.

“As a firm you need to evolve and work hard to meet these challenges.

“You need to thrive to survive.”

McCabe, who founded the firm back in 1991 and spent nine years in the top job as managing partner, said he looks forward to practicing under Lacey’s leadership.

“The time has come to re-focus my energies on the fast growing private wealth practice which I have established over many years,” McCabe said.

“I know the future of the firm is in sound hands under the leadership of Andrew Lacey and look forward to seeing what the next 25 years brings.”
