DLA Piper partners with small Melbourne firm to sell 1.4m-hectare cattle stations
A global law firm has teamed up with a small Melbourne firm to sell cattle stations in Western Australia.

DLA Piper, together with Lamplugh McIntosh, advised the Yougawalla Pastoral Company on the sale of three cattle stations in the Kimberly region in northern WA. Included in the sale, worth about $70m, are the Yougawalla, Bulka, and Margaret River stations, as well as the rights under various commercial leases with Aboriginal pastoral groups.

The stations cover more than 1.4m hectares of land and the business sold includes more than 45,000 head of cattle. It was purchased by Hui Wing Mau, the Hong Kong-based Chinese-Australian billionaire who made his fortune in real estate.

The Yougawalla Pastoral Company is majority owned by media mogul Harold Mitchell. The sale also included APN Outdoor Group chair Doug Flynn’s stake.

The DLA Piper team was led by Melbourne corporate partner Mark Burger. He was supported by senior associate Dylan Burke and DLA Piper's finance, employment and real estate teams. Rod Lamplugh led the team from Lamplugh McIntosh.

"The northern Australian cattle industry is strong, with increasing interest from foreign investors,” Burger said.
