Bar Council concerned over proposed training reforms
The body representing barristers in England & Wales says it is concerned about potential changes which it says could dilute the profession.

The UK’s Bar Standards Board is proposing several amendments to current rules, including an exemption for solicitor advocates from part of the qualification period.

This, the Bar Council says, will enable solicitors to gain admission to the bar as a “badge of honour” while avoiding the harder route to admission taken by barristers.

The Law Society Gazette reports that the Bar Council is also concerned that fast-tracking academics through two of the three training stages would be detrimental as not all professors of law will have the necessary breadth of skills.

The Bar Services Board is due to finalise its proposed rule changes in the coming months and they could come into effect in 2019.
