The County Court of Victoria has announced the appointment of Arushan Pillay as judge.

Pillay was educated at the University of Tasmania, admitted to practise in 1996, and was called to the Victorian Bar in 2003. After becoming barrister, Pillay practised in the fields of occupational health and safety, administrative law, and personal injuries.

He has represented numerous statutory bodies, including the Medical Panels Victoria, the Nurses Board of Victoria, the Victims of Crimes Assistance Tribunal, and the Legal Aid Commission. He was also nominated for the Victorian Bar’s Pro Bono Award in 2017 for his work as lead counsel at the inquest into the death of Numan Haider in the 2014 Endeavour Hills stabbings.

Additionally, Pillay is the co-author of the “Cultural intelligence at the Bar” editorial in the Victorian Bar News.

A welcome ceremony for Pillay will be held on Friday at the County Court.
