Corrs confirms role in $150m affordable-housing deal

Corrs Chambers Westgarth has helped its client get a slice of a massive affordable-housing project.

The independent firm advised SGCH Portfolio Ltd, a subsidiary of St George Community Housing Ltd, on its successful $150m bid for the second phase of the NSW government’s Social Affordable Housing Fund.

Partners Andrew Chew and Rommel Harding-Farrenberg and special counsel Megan Russell headed the Corrs team on the deal. They were assisted by partners Natalie Bryant and Mark Payne, senior associate Catherine Bray, associate Jennifer Gamble and graduate lawyers Cristina Beretta and Blake Osmond.

The social housing developer has been tapped to deliver 260 homes in the Alexandria, Bondi Junction, Newtown, Petersham, Riverwood, and Liverpool suburbs of Sydney. The first 26 new homes will be delivered this April.

Corrs said that it advised on all aspects of the SGCH phase 2 bid. That includes project finance arrangements with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The work has earned praise from Scott Langford, the SGCH Group chief executive.

He said that the company worked together with partners including CommBank and the City of Sydney for the project that will develop dedicated housing for vulnerable households, including those with older single women, women and children experiencing domestic and family violence, Aboriginal people, and people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

“We have also worked closely with Corrs on this and a number of transactions and successful tenders and their team’s commercially aware advice and guidance, looking to innovate to our benefit whenever possible, have been invaluable,” he said.

Herbert Smith Freehills advised the New South Wales Department of Family and Community Services on the deal.
