Corrs CEO named co-chair of key G20 taskforce

The CEO of Corrs Chambers Westgarth has been appointed to jointly lead a taskforce of a key G20 engagement group.

John W.H. Denton AO has been named a co-chair of the “Financing Growth & Infrastructure Taskforce” of the B20 for the second consecutive year. The B20, the first engagement group recognised by the G20, is the private sector’s group in the G20 and is included the G20’s decision-making process.

In his role at the B20 taskforce, Denton will provide recommendations around global business issues, including frameworks for financial systems that are resilient while fostering growth in the real economy. He will also make recommendations around initiatives to help drive global investment and economic growth, improve tax cooperation, and foster business development, Corrs said.

The B20 operates like the G20, with its secretariat and presidency rotating among member countries every year. Germany chaired the B20 last year and it invited Denton to co-chair the same taskforce. Argentina, which chairs the B20 this year, appointed Denton.

“It is an honour to have been asked to be part of this process. The B20 helps set the agenda for globally significant business issues and is a vital voice for the international business community,” Denton said. “Clients rely heavily on our firm to help guide them through complex issues and the continually changing business and political environments. I intend to utilise this same approach for the business community in my role as co-chair of this taskforce.”

Denton is currently first vice-chair of the world’s largest business organisation, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He is also the incoming secretary general of the organisation.

He will assume his permanent role as ICC secretary general when he steps down as Corrs CEO in July. The top firm has appointed Gavin MacLaren, the current managing partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Singapore, to succeed Denton.

“The ICC has always been a strategic partner for the B20. This year it will continue being so, reinforced by the opportunity of having John Denton as one of the members actively involved occupying a co-chair role,” said Daniel Funes de Rioja, B20 chair. “We believe Mr Denton's view and approach to the task force are of the greatest value.”
