Colin Biggers & Paisley names new special counsel to insurance group

Colin Biggers & Paisley has appointed a new special counsel in their insurance group in Sydney.

The firm announced Wednesday that it has brought in Steven Lurie, a veteran lawyer with over 17 years’ experience in commercial litigation, professional indemnity, construction, liability insurance and financial lines.

Lurie has acted for insurers as both defence and coverage counsel and in recovery proceedings, including international arbitration proceedings.

"We are recognised as one of Australia's leading insurance law practices and our insurance group continues to grow rapidly. Steven will be a great asset to our team. His experience and knowledge will further support and strengthen our capabilities," said Andrew Tulloch, head of the law firm’s insurance group.

According to CBP, Lurie’s background includes acting for D&O insurers in the long-running litigation arising out of the collapse of New Cap Reinsurance, for geotechnical engineers in respect of the Lane Cove Tunnel collapse, and over 10 years' experience acting for and against legal practitioners, including on behalf of LawCover and Law Mutual.

Last month, the firm named Nick Crennan as its next managing partner, starting in October. Crennan has been the firm’s deputy managing partner for over 16 months. He has been with the firm for almost 30 years. He began his career as a junior solicitor, eventually becoming a partner in CBP’s construction and engineering group. Crennan became the deputy head of the group four years ago.
