Clifford Chance was involved in the financing of a US$1bn clean-energy project in Laos.
The Magic Circle firm worked with Thai law firm Chandler MHM to advise Bangkok Bank PCL, Export-Import Bank of Thailand, The Siam Commercial Bank PCL, and TISCO Bank PCL on the financing of the Nam Theun 1 hydroelectric power project on the Nam Kading river.
“This project brought together the best local and international law teams to deliver a great result for the sustainable production of power in the region. We are delighted to have been part of that team,“ said Fergus Evans, Clifford Chance’s lead partner on the transaction.
Evans was supported by associates Chanuth Tansomboon, Wassamon Puthipad, and Nattawat Vilasdechanon.
The Chandler MHM team, which provided Thai law advise, was led by partner Joseph Tisuthiwongse. He was supported by Disaporn Saengpetch, Nopamon Thevit Intralib and Kobkul Trakulkoed.
The major hydroelectric plant, which closed its financing last month, has entered into purchase agreement with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and Electricité Du Laos, which will be supplied 514.3 MW and 130 MW of power for 27 years, respectively. The project is expected to operate in 2022.
