Chinese university does legal AI
Peking University has partnered with Gridsum Holdings to launch a legal artificial intelligence (AI) program.

The collaboration has established the Peking University Legal Artificial Intelligence Lab and Research Institute. The lab will focus on the analysis, development, and application of AI in China’s legal ecosystem, Gridsum said.

The launch follows the Chinese government’s announcement in July that it would establish a global AI innovation centre. The government announced later that the legal industry would be a main focus of the centre. The country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the centre would also research AI-related policies, laws, and regulations.

Shouwen Zhang, Peking University Law School dean, has been appointed director of the legal AI lab, while Xiaolei Yang, Peking University Law School vice president, has been named executive director of the lab.

Guosheng Qi, Gridsum CEO, and Jingye Ye, Peking University deputy party committee secretary, helped launch the new lab. The Gridsum CEO said that the launch of the lab will directly benefit the development and application of AI across China’s judicial system as it moves towards its goal of becoming a “smart courts” system.
