Australian legal heavyweight tapped to lead KPMG’s global legal business

Stuart Fuller has been tasked by KPMG to be the global leader of its legal services business.

Fuller is the first Australian to be selected by KPMG for the global role. He joined the Big Four accounting firm in 2018 to lead KMPG Law in Australia.

He made the move from Sino-Australian legal juggernaut King & Wood Mallesons, where he was global managing partner. He has since also been named Asia-Pacific regional leader of KPMG legal services.

Fuller, who will continue to be based in Australia, takes over from Swiss-based Juerg Birri, who will retire from the firm at the end of the month. KPMG also said that partner Kate Marshall will become head of KPMG Law in Australia once Fuller assumes his new role on 1 August.

The appointments are milestones for both the Australian and global firms, said Gary Wingrove, KPMG Australia chief executive.

“Stuart has outstanding international experience, understands the demands of cross border transactions and the pressures of operating in a global environment but also brings the local view from his excellent track record in both the Australian and Asia-Pacific legal and business markets,” Wingrove said.

He also explained why Marshall is uniquely placed to lead KMPG Law in Australia. The firm recently expanded down under with the launch of a government-focused practice in Canberra.

“With the appointment of Kate Marshall, we have a leader who is an expert in the key areas of emerging technologies, privacy compliance, and digital strategy. In addition, Kate’s data breach experience, and her recent work with KPMG’s forensic and cyber teams make her ideally suited to drive growth in a time when business is looking for strong guidance in these key areas,” he said.
