The firm is rebuilding its New York team after the departure of more than half a dozen partners this year
Ashurst is boosting its tax practice in New York with the hire of a partner from Dentons and the promotion of a partner in the city.
The global firm has hired Jeffrey Koppele from Dentons. It has also appointed Sharon Kim, who was previously a tax counsel, to partner.
Andy Fraiser, managing partner of the global firm in North America, said that strengthening Ashurst’s US tax capability also bolsters the firm’s global structured products, equity and debt capital markets, high-yield, banking, and fund formation practices. It also benefits the firm’s transactional practices in the US, he said.
Koppele, who has been a partner at Dentons for more than seven years, joined the global giant when it merged with Sonnenschein Nathan & Rosenthal in 2010. He was previously a partner at Thacher Proffitt & Wood, and a tax associate at both Latham & Watkins and Weil Gotshal & Manges. He specialises in tax and derivatives.
Kim was among the group of lawyers, which included 11 partners, that moved to Ashurst in 2009 from McKee Nelson. The firm was a long-time Ashurst ally that was acquired by Bingham McCutchen that year.
With Fraiser’s hire, Ashurst’s New York legal team grows to 21, including five partners.
Recently, the firm lost three partners in London. In October, another partner left its New York outpost. The departures came after the firm lost six partners in New York in July as a result of exiting the collateralised loan obligation market.
