Another US firm heading for Asia
US-based law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione is hoping to become an international firm with an office in China, its first outside the US. The Chicago-based firm has filed an application with the Shenzhen Justice Bureau to open an office in the region.
The firm already represents a number of Chinese clients for US intellectual property and recently took part in the 2016 Annual Conference of the Licensing Executives Society International in Beijing.

Start-ups in the tech sector can now access a fund to help them with the legal challenges in their new business. International law firm Simmons & Simmons says the fund is a first-of-its-kind and will provide up funding for three or four early-stage businesses each year subject to eligibility criteria. The firm has established an international FinTech team made up of expert lawyers from across all practice areas.

The law firm at the centre of the Panama Papers document leak has announced the closure of some of its offices. Mossack Fonseca will shut three locations in the British Crown dependencies of Jersey, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man after more than 20 years. The firm says it has made with decision “with great regret” but that it follows a strategy of office consolidation.
Justin Bieber copyright lawsuit defended on Twitter
A lawsuit alleging that teen-superstar Justin Bieber and music producer Skrillex sampled another song without permission, has been denied… on Twitter. Sonny John Moore (aka Skrillex) posted a studio acoustic session for the duo’s song ‘Sorry’ with the denial “SORRY but we didn’t steal this.” It was retweeted by Bieber with #wedontsteal.
Entertainment Weekly reports that singer-songwriter White Hinterland filed the lawsuit last week claiming that ‘Sorry’ infringes on the copyright of her song ‘Ring My Bell’, released a year before Bieber’s song.
