15 men and 4 women have been appointed as senior counsel

19 take silk in NSW

New South Wales Bar Association President Arthur Moses SC has revealed that 19 barristers have been appointed as senior counsel (SC).

Among the newly appointed silk, 15 are men and four are women. The group is larger than last year’s, when just 11 took silk, the fewest in the state since 1993.

The NSW Bar received 116 applications this year, 98 of which were from men and 18 of which were from women.

There are 2,414 barristers holding NSW practising certificates, with male barristers totalling 1,857 (76.93%) and women barristers totalling 557 (23.07%). Among barristers with NSW practising certificates, 394 hold silk (16.3%), 44 of whom are women (11.16%) and 350 of whom are men (88.84%). Among female barristers with NSW practising certificates, 7.9% hold silk, while the same is true for 18.84% of men.
