Rising Stars 2020

Company: LOD
Title: Head of secondment operations
Age: 30

In the past few years, Emily McCarthy has been recognised as a young leader, particularly within the NewLaw industry. In 2017 and again in 2019, she was a finalist at the Telstra Business Women’s Awards. Along with being a practising lawyer, she is also a senior leader within the LOD business and has management responsibility. Some of McCarthy’s achievements in the legal industry include receiving HR Professional of the Year at the 2019 Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards in recognition of the integration work she managed after the Lexvoco acquisition by LOD; advising on panels such as Lexis Nexis ‘Human vs Cloud’ series focused on the challenges faced by lawyers in a fast-moving and technology-focused environment; and being referenced in the Australian Financial Review discussing work/life balance and incentives for lawyers. In May 2019, when the NewLaw firm, Lexvoco, that McCarthy was an owner and senior leader within, was acquired by LOD, she was named as the project manager for what became known as ‘Project Plus+’ – the integration project. This was an essential step in managing both practical aspects around operational issues and the intangible needs of staff impacted by the transaction.
