Rising Stars 2020

Company: Harmers Workplace Lawyers
Title: Executive Counsel and Team Leader
Age: 29

Amy Zhang is the youngest team leader (partner equivalent) in the history of Harmers Workplace Lawyers. She’s been a finalist in multiple categories of the 30 under 30 Awards, Australian Law Awards and NSW Women Lawyers Achievement Award. Based on over 20 years of legal practice, at both a large international law firm and at Harmers, Zhang is regarded as ‘an exceptional legal practitioner’ by staff, clients and counsel. In her role as team leader, she is involved in all aspects of the firm including recruitment, business development, financial and succession planning. She is provided complex work and a level autonomy that is unusual for one so young, but that’s credit to her ability to quickly grasp sophisticated legal concepts and processes. The breadth of Zhang’s achievements and leadership include supervising lawyers and support staff within the firm; regularly providing volunteer pro-bono services to community legal centres; tutoring and mentoring both high school and law students of non-English speaking background; and regularly preparing submissions on law reform, including with leading legal organisations.
