Mills Oakley preps Perth team for upcoming WHS legislation with new special counsel

Mills Oakley has prepared its team in Perth for upcoming WHS legislation with the hire of a new special counsel.

Daniel Hill joins the firm’s workplace relations, employment and safety (WRES) practice. He will be at the helm of the safety offering’s growth in Perth.

“With the WA version of the harmonised WHS laws due to come into effect in January, it is appropriate that we now have a dedicated senior WHS practitioner to lead the Perth team’s expanding safety function at this critical time,” Mills Oakley WRES partner Daniel White said.

Hill has long specialised in WHS, having tackled matters in the energy, EPCM, mining, rail, utilities, construction and healthcare sectors. He has advised on the review and design of front-end WHS systems and on regulatory investigations and back end litigation such as provisional improvement notices and prosecution defences.

He has provided guidance on contentious and non-contentious advisory matters, and acted for clients on a wide range of crisis management events.

Hill has considerable in-house experience, having held positions at BHP and Fluor Australia before going on to serve as general manager of a major rail operator in the country.

“The Mills Oakley WRES team has an impressive sense of strategic clarity and an unwavering commitment to servicing clients in the WHS space – both of which were important factors in my decision to join the team,” Hill explained.

He began working with Mills Oakley in Perth on 6 October.

Earlier this year, the firm also bolstered its employment law team in Canberra with the appointment of NSW Law Society-accredited specialist Will Ward as partner.
