US giant’s rare move lands it a partner with extensive experience in taxation for M&A, investments, and disputes
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has attracted the London tax head of a Magic Circle firm.
In a rare lateral hire, the US giant has confirmed that Yash Rupal will join the firm as partner in London. Making the move from Linklaters, he will become UK head of tax at Simpson Thacher when he joins.
The appointment follows the high-profile transfer of Amy Mahon from Clifford Chance to Simpson Thacher in late 2018.
Known for his tax expertise, Rupal has extensive experience in M&A, investment fund planning, tax planning, disputes and litigation, and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs enquiries.
“With more than 30 years of experience advising many of the world’s leading asset managers and financial institutions, Yash is widely regarded as one of the most preeminent tax practitioners in London. He will expand our tax capabilities for clients with interests in the UK, continental Europe and beyond,” said Bill Dougherty, Simpson Thacher’s executive committee chair.
Rupal advises and acts for a wide range of UK and international corporates, financial institutions, investment and hedge funds, and asset managers.
Jason Glover, Simpson Thacher’s London managing partner, said that Rupal is a “very talented tax advisor.” He said that the UK tax team, working in tandem with the US tax practice, “will be available to support our clients in providing commercial, value-added advice in respect of UK and EU tax issues at a time when tax authorities are applying greater scrutiny to the activities of both institutions and individuals.”
Simpson Thacher has more than 100 London-based lawyers, who advise on a wide range of matters and transactions across Europe. The firm’s London office accounted for more than US$200m in revenues last year.
