“Michael is truly a thought leader in the private client space,” Mr McCarthy said. “He is extremely well respected and knowledgeable in all aspects of (the) highly complex area of law that surrounds estate and succession planning. He has a proven track-record of handling difficult issues with sensitivity and the ability to refine complex concepts in a way that empowers clients make sound decisions.”

Perkins said that Nexus represents a next generation law firm already focused on relationship-based business and collaboration as a value driver for clients.

“It is the perfect platform from which we continue to scale a globally competitive private client practice that matches its peers in the network of firms that are represented through the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners,” he said.

He will lead a team that specialises in estate planning, family enterprise governance, succession planning, conflict and dispute resolution, and social and community contribution.

Perkins is a co-author of the well-regarded text “Estate Planning: a practical guide for estate and financial services professionals” and contributing author to the 4th, 5th and 6th editions of the text “Financial Planning in Australia.” With his frequent collaborator, Robert Monahan, Perkins originated the estate-planning framework that places social and community contribution at the forefront of estate planning.

Perkins and Monahan have been writing and teaching in this field for more than 15 years. The texts are widely used for university-level education and a broad range of professional advisers.

“We have helped move community attitudes away from the view that estate planning is just dealing with a person’s will. We helped reshape community and professional understanding that estate planning is not just about death or dying, but the ability to develop a deeper understanding of a client before crafting a solution to meet their needs,” Perkins said. “Our focus remains that our work helps facilitate the sustainable operations of our clients and their family, business, wealth and succession planning.”
