ALRC gets new president

The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) will be welcoming a new president in Federal Court Judge Mordecai Bromberg on 10 July.

The appointment was announced by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus KC last week. Bromberg will be leading the commission for a five-year term.

“Justice Bromberg has significant experience in the leadership of legal research and expertise across a broad range of practice areas, including industrial law, personal injuries, commercial law, product liability, constitutional law, administrative law, and trade practices”, Dreyfus said in a media release.

In 2005, Bromberg led the Australian Institute of Employment Rights as founding president. He first joined the Federal Court bench in 2009.

At present, he is chair of the University of Melbourne’s Advisory Board of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law.

The Law Council of Australia lauded Bromberg’s appointment to the role. Dreyfus confirmed that acting ALRC president Mark Moshinsky would be serving as a part-time commissioner.
