NewLaw takes on traditional firms with ‘On Call’ service

A NewLaw firm is expanding their capability with a competitive new service, in a bid to take on traditional firms.

Hundred-and-seventy lawyer strong firm, AdventBalance has launched a competitive ‘On Call’ service, tackling traditional firms head on.

An evolution of the NewLaw firm’s secondment business, ‘AdventBalance On Call’ will provide clients with economical legal advice on an ad-hoc basis.

“Unlike a traditional law firm, we don’t need to maintain a standing army of lawyers waiting for work to come in the door,” said CEO Ken Jagger.  “Because we’ve got that large group of flexible lawyers who can be put onto projects and transactions, we can just bring them on as and when required by the client.”

Starting out as primarily a secondment service in 2008, the firm now has six offices throughout the Asia Pacific region and as a result, is the largest alternative legal service in the region.

“This model will ensure that clients are not paying for the privilege of a traditional law firm maintaining a standing army of lawyers,” said Jagger.

“The model will also provide our existing lawyers and consultants with a greater range of opportunities.  At their choice, they will be able to work in-house on secondments or externally through AdventBalance On Call.”

Managing principal Jamie Prell said as well as using their existing lawyers, the firm is taking a unique approach expanding the team.
“We have the initial team in place and we are currently talking to a number of other partners and former general counsel about joining the team,” he said.
 
“We are also taking the unique approach of speaking to our existing clients not only about this offering, but on who they would like us to hire.  We are on the lookout for lawyers who have existing relationships with our clients and who want to work in a more flexible way with a focus on client outcomes and value, not hourly billing targets.”
