DLA Piper has successfully brought former Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) partner Adam Smith into its partnership.

Smith joins the tax practice group in Melbourne. He specialises in income tax, goods and services tax, and stamp duty.

He also provides strategic advice on land tax, council rates, fringe benefits tax, payroll tax, and employee share schemes. Moreover, he deals with tax implications of various commercial dealings, such as cross-border M&A, divestments, corporate structuring, financing arrangements, and property and development transactions.

Smith has advised leading insurance underwriters across the Asia-Pacific market on the tax policy aspects of warranty and indemnity insurance underwriting. His clients include individuals and corporations within the insurance, financial services, wealth management, energy, infrastructure, real estate, and retail sectors.

Smith’s tenure with NRF lasted almost 11 years, and he made partner at the firm in 2019. He was also a tax practitioner at MinterEllison and held a tax consultant position at Ernst & Young.

In addition to his legal work, he currently sits on the state taxes committee of the Law Institute of Victoria.

“I’m excited to be joining DLA Piper, which has such a strong international reputation and standing, particularly in cross-border M&A and across the insurance sector in Australia, where it already has a leading warranty and indemnity practice,” Smith said.
