Private healthcare provider clinches long-term concession with G+T's aid

Firm's client wins after a six-month competitive tender process run by the Tasmanian government

Private healthcare provider clinches long-term concession with G+T's aid

Gilbert + Tobin (G+T) was the legal adviser of Healthscope in its successful bid for the long-term concession for the Hobart Private Hospital.

The private healthcare provider, which has 43 hospitals in Australia and even more pathology operations in New Zealand, won the contract to operate the Hobart Private Hospital after a six-month competitive tender process run by the Tasmanian government.

Financial details of the new 20-year contract, which commenced last month, were not disclosed.

The Hobart Private Hospital is the only private hospital in Hobart that is co-located with a tertiary hospital, the Royal Hobart Hospital, which is the largest in the island state. Licensed for 142 overnight beds, it features an emergency department, five operating theatres, a cardiac catheterisation lab, maternity unit, and critical care unit.

The hospital directly employs more than 550 people, including 350 nurses. It has more than 350 consulting doctors. On average each year, the hospital treats more than 23,500 patients and is the site for 14,000 procedures.

G+T said that it advised Healthscope on all aspects of the tender process, including extensive contract negotiations with the Tasmanian Government. Healthscope was appointed as the preferred tenderer in August, which when exclusive negotiations commenced.

The G+T team was headed by banking and infrastructure partner Alexander Danne, who was supported by senior lawyer Daniel Yim, and lawyers Dylan Gardner and Christopher Ashen.

“The hospital plays a central role in the overall Tasmanian healthcare system, and the new contract provides certainty to the Tasmanian public around emergency and key clinical services, eases pressure on the Royal Hobart Hospital, and paves the way for continued capital investment,” Danne said.

G+T has been a longstanding adviser to Healthscope. It has advised the company on infrastructure projects, including the Gold Coast Private Hospital and the Northern Beaches Hospital.
