Clayton Utz welcomes commercial litigation partner Matt Spain

Clayton Utz's Melbourne office has welcomed Matt Spain as a partner in the firm's national litigation and dispute resolution team.

He joins the firm with two other lawyers from his team—Lucy Walsh and Margit Baranyay. Spain has an extensive experience in general commercial litigation, particularly in financial services disputes, class actions, regulatory investigations, and commissions and inquiries.

Clients described Spain as "an outstanding lawyer" who "provides valuable advice and support whenever needed." He has been instrumental in several noteworthy financial services matters, and has represented several financial clients in significant regulatory investigations and disputes, including the Financial Services Royal Commission.

Spain obtained his law degree from Deakin University and took up advanced insolvency law and practice from the University of Southern Queensland in 2007. He was admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia, Victoria, NSW, and Ontario. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Law Institute of Victoria.

Clayton Utz national practice group leader - litigation Greg Williams said Spain's focus on financial services disputes and superannuation, as well as his professional reputation, made him an excellent fit for the firm.

"Matt is respected as an outstanding lawyer whose clients value his calm and considered approach to guiding them through complex disputes and matters. Matt's experience and sector focus, particularly his superannuation expertise, is a good strategic fit for our existing litigation offering. We're pleased to welcome him, Lucy and Margit to the team," Williams said.

Spain said that he was “really excited to join a team that clients trust to handle their most significant and strategic disputes and investigations”, and that he was “looking forward to growing the firm's superannuation offering”.

"With Lucy and Margit coming on board as well, we'll be able to collaborate with the firm's strong front-end financial services teams to ensure our existing and new clients obtain optimal results", he said.
